SEO vs. SEM for Freelancers and Entrepreneurs: Improve Your Marketing Strategy
The Interaction Design Foundation
An entrepreneur or freelancer has two main strategies to tap into when marketing online. Search Engine Optimization (SEO), which attempts to rank your website on search engines “organically”, and Search Engine Marketing (SEM), which ranks your website in search results in exchange for money. Both strategies can be used to build a business successfully—but which one is right for you? A great way to market your business is to use search engines to help your customers find you online. Adblock on Lock
by Counterintuity @ Counterintuity
Mon Dec 12 15:38:48 PST 2016
Once upon a time, an advertiser’s main concern was whether audiences would respond to an ad. Today, that concern has shifted to whether audiences will even see an ad. In an ever-growing trend, savvy surfers are skipping the promotions and heading straight to the content by using (free) ad blocking software. And this has caused no small problem for advertisers. The world’s most popular ad blocking application, Adblock Plus, has been downloaded over 500 million times. The number of active daily users has gone up from 21 million in 2010 to 181 million in 2015. Ad blocking allegedly cost the ad industry $22 billion in 2015 alone, and consulting firm Ovum predicts that by 2020 it’ll have accounted for another $35 billion in losses. Even as marketing professionals, we get it. A lot of online ads are just plain annoying – and as long as that’s true, ad blocking isn’t going anywhere. Our recommendation? Rise above the standard fare and show consumers that not all ads are bad. Opt out of auto-play. There’s nothing worse than visiting a site only to be bombarded by a strange voice shouting about floor cleaner. Rather than engage in a frantic search for the source of interruption, many will leave the site altogether; and that’s no good for anyone. Keep it simple. If people don’t want to see ads, they certainly don’t want to work for ads. Make sure your content is clear, engaging and accessible. Avoid gimmicky graphics. No one’s going to click on that flashing “50% OFF” ad (at least, not on purpose). You might think the theatrics will help you stand out from the crowd, and they will – but not in a good way! A classy, well-designed image has a better shot at catching eyes. What would make you stop using an ad blocker?...

How to Cultivate a Cohesive Customer Experience (AKA Winning Like Walgreens)
by Counterintuity @ Counterintuity
Tue Jun 27 10:07:54 PDT 2017
Here’s the thing about most modern customers: If they don’t like the way you’re doing business, they’ll take their business elsewhere. Quickly. They’ve got high expectations and a whole lot of options – so it’s vital to offer the best possible experience both online and in-store. While reading this Think With Google interview with Deepika Pandey, the Chief Digital Marketing Officer of Walgreens Boots Alliance, we realized she’s got this down – and three key points really struck a chord with us. A customer is a customer. According to Business Insider, U.S. consumers are expected to spend more than $630 billion online in 2020. All that money funneling into online purchases means you’re going to lose in-store business. It’s just a fact. The trick is not to treat that as a problem to avoid, but as an opportunity to be seized. Like Pandey says, “Customers who shop in-store and on mobile are 6X more valuable to us than those who shop only in a store.” One of the reasons we at Counterintuity focus on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and keyword optimization when creating ads for clients is that 93 percent of online experiences start with a search engine – and we want to ensure your customers see you first, even if they’re clicking a link rather than shaking your hand. Anticipate needs (and wants, while you’re at it). Only 7 percent of online shoppers believe that brands do a good job of customizing their online experience – but you can be the exception. Walgreens makes it a goal to assist every single customer in the most efficient and effective way possible, and so can you. But rather than simply meeting the customer’s expectations, prompt them to consider needs they haven’t yet anticipated themselves. One great way to do that? Lead-capture...

CRO and SEO: SEM Civil War
Moz
civil war n. A state of hostility or conflict between elements within an organization.Alright, so search marketing isn't really an "organization" but there is a certain hostility within its ranks. It's the war of the acronyms and funding. For years there have been articles, studies, and conference panels surrounding the debate of paid search versus organic search. That rivalry is rather ancient now considering the new kids on the block: CRO, SMO, and LPO. Who will win the war? Simple. If any one side wins the war in your organization, you are the loser.

Pleasing Panda: Your Guide to Google’s Search Algorithm
by Counterintuity @ Counterintuity
Thu Aug 10 07:34:06 PDT 2017
Back in 2016, we wrote a blog about Penguin, Google’s link evaluator. Now, we’d like to focus on Panda – and aside from their namesakes’ retweet-worthy levels of cuteness, these are two creatures of a different color. Panda’s been monitoring your content and modifying your search ranking accordingly since 2011. Google’s increasingly frequent updates to the algorithm – six between January and May 2017, according to GSQi – mean it’s only getting smarter and more selective. So, what can you do to please Panda? Take a good, hard look at your website. Is it fully functional? Filled with quality content? Easy to use? Tone it down. Panda can smell aggressive advertising from a mile away, and doesn’t like seeing users pestered by persistence. Beef it up. When it comes to content, thin is not in; low quality content can result in a serious penalty. Focus on providing your users with relevant, original content. Be a query master. Create content to match user queries, and don’t get hung up on length. Resorting to spammy text to hit 300 words is not Panda-approved – what’s important is that your final answer is effective. Service that SEO. While technical SEO doesn’t have a direct impact on Panda, any issues can negatively affect UX – so ensure that tech glitches or performance issues are promptly sorted. Remember to keep your site tight at all times (with our help, if needed). Just ’cause you can’t see Panda, doesn’t mean it’s not there!
