The simple answer is no – search engine submission isn’t necessary. The majority of search engines nowadays (most notably Google) crawl and index pages by following links. Unemployment in the East Midlands is better than the national average
by @ East Midlands Chamber
Wed Sep 13 05:24:00 PDT 2017
Unemployment in the East Midlands continues to be better than the national average, latest figures show.
Quarterly data released this morning by the Office for National Statistics revealed unemployment at 4.3% across the country for the three months to the end of July, the best since 1975.
In the East Midlands, unemployment for the three months to the end of July was 3.91%, better than the previous quarter, a year and two years earlier.
Employment rates nationally, at 75.3% for the three months, were the highest since records began in 1971.
In the East Midlands, the employment rate for the period for people aged 16+ was 59.01%, slightly down on the previous quarter, year and two years’ figures.
The increase in the national figure, according to Government, is due to people of all ages finding work, with employment levels of those over 50 reaching a record high, youth unemployment falling by over 40% since 2010 and the proportion of young people who are unemployed and not in full time education dropping below five per cent for the first time.
The record figures were driven by increases in full-time and permanent work. In the past year, Government said, there was a shift from part-time to full-time employment and 20,000 fewer people on zero hour contracts.
“Today’s figures support the very latest data from our own Quarterly Economic Surveys which show that in the past three months 35% of firms increased their workforce and only 12% of firms reduced theirs,” said Chris Hobson, Director of Policy at the Chamber.
He added: “Of those that recruited, 64% said it was to cope with business growth but, worryingly, 59% said they had difficulty finding people to fill skilled manual, professional, managerial, clerical, unskilled and semi-skilled positions.
“And that’s a problem that will only worsen as, despite the uncertainty of Brexit and having a Government without an overall majority, firms continue to grow and the available pool of potential workers keeps getting smaller.
“It’s imperative now that every effort is made to ensure the available workforce has the skills employers need and that those leaving academia have at least the basic maths, English and problem-solving skills that will make them employable.
“What today’s figures really do is confirm the need for a sensible, long-term strategy for linking education policy to the needs of business and, more immediately, ensuring we don’t hamstring ourselves with an overly restrictive immigration policy as we come out of the EU.”
The figures released this morning showed the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in August increased across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire when compared with July, with only Leicester city showing no monthly change.

Bing integrates Facebook into Search
by @ Cloudblue Web Design RSS Feed
A new feature has been introduced to Microsoft’s search engine Bing, which allows it to integrate with Facebook. This is to help users navigate search results through the ‘likes’ of their friends on Facebook.
So to take advantage of this new tool, you will have to be sign-in to your Facebook account whilst searching within Bing, which shows users what sites and services their friends have used and recommended within the search results.
Google did a similar move to incorporate social media into their search result by displaying Facebook and Twitter feeds. However this move by Bing goes one step further by displaying comments from Facebook users underneath the search results.
Microsoft clearly wants to use the vast amount of data amassed by Facebook, which now has around 600 million users worldwide, by using social media to give a more personal review from friends and family known as the "Friend Effect" into its search engine results.
If you would like to find out more about Social Media and how it can help your business grow please contact Neil at neil@cloudbluewebdesign.co.uk.

Chevin Fleet Solutions is Derbyshire Business of the Year
by @ East Midlands Chamber
Sat Sep 09 02:09:00 PDT 2017
A world-leader in fleet management software has taken top honours at the region’s most prestigious business awards.
Belper-based Chevin Fleet Solutions, which has staff in America, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, and, most recently, Jordan, and distribution agents in Africa, won the Business of the Year accolade at last night’s East Midlands Chamber* Derbyshire Business Awards.
The firm’s software is used in fleet management in more than 180 countries. Customers range from UK councils and ambulance services to the International Red Cross, UNHCR, New York State and the Kenya Police - monitoring data for more than one million vehicles around the globe.
The software has helped the efficiency of hundreds of companies worldwide and has saved clients tens of thousands of pounds.
Receiving the award, the initial reaction of Ashley Sowerby, founder and Managing Director, was: “I’m gobsmacked, absolutely gobsmacked.”
He later added: “Mine is a 27-year-old business. We have grown throughout that time from, quite literally my parents’ kitchen table to global success, but keeping our roots local to Derby.
“I am amazed at the quality of the businesses at these awards tonight and absolutely delighted, personally and for my team, to have won the Business of the Year award. I’m gobsmacked.”
The company was one of 12 to win an award last night (Friday 8 September), as the Chamber celebrated the strength and success of businesses across Derby and Derbyshire.
To qualify as a contender for the supreme accolade of Business of the Year, Chevin Fleet Solutions had already won the Excellence in International Trade award.
Chamber President Geoff Poyzer said: “The Chamber’s congratulations go to all of this year’s winners. We had some really good entries and the judging process, as it is every year, was extremely tough, but all the winning businesses thoroughly deserve their success.
“The standard of competition was extremely high, which clearly shows that despite the political and economic uncertainties of Brexit and a General Election resulting in a minority Government, we have some real success stories about Derbyshire businesses doing very well. All of the finalists deserve recognition for their success.
“Over the past 12 months, businesses in Derbyshire have been busy keeping calm and carrying on investing, innovating, exporting and growing. These awards are testament to the quality of the businesses we have in this city and county and I applaud each and every one of them.”

ScaleUp Service for ambitious businesses now available from D2N2 Growth Hub
by @ East Midlands Chamber
Tue Sep 12 03:45:00 PDT 2017
Fast-growing and ambitious businesses are being offered a helping hand to step up to the next level.
The D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) – the private sector-led partnership promoting economic and jobs growth across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire – is offering financial assistance and coaching to firms keen to ‘scale up’.
According to Sherry Coutu, in the Scale-Up Report, it is estimated that growth of just one per cent in the number of UK companies scaling up could create 238,000 new jobs and add £38bn to the UK’s GVA (Gross Value Added, a measure of the value of goods and services an area produces versus its consumption of resources) within three years.
Firms qualifying for D2N2 Growth Hub ScaleUp, marketed by the LEP’s D2N2 Growth Hub, will be small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) which have achieved some or all of the following criteria or be able to demonstrate their ambition and potential to do so in the foreseeable future:
• employ ten or more people at the start of the qualifying period
• have a turnover of between £1m and £15m a year;
• have consistent annual growth of at least 20% for the past three years.
The D2N2 Growth Hub – which works closely with SMEs in the LEP area to help them grow – has identified almost 200 companies across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire which could qualify for support under the ScaleUp Service. It is being delivered in partnership with Nottingham Trent University’s Nottingham Business School, the Professional Coaching Alliance, the Centre for Management & Business Development and East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire).
Businesses meeting the eligibility criteria will initially receive a free comprehensive review of their scale up challenges to explore the specific issues related to rapid business growth and develop a bespoke action plan.
Those selected to take part will receive high-quality coaching to help address identified priority areas and leadership and management development, access to workshops focusing on identifying potential markets, advice on sales and marketing and access to finance and bespoke support through an executive peer-to-peer network.
SMEs will be able to reclaim, through a grant scheme, a proportion of the cost of the business support package to help them reach the next level of growth.
Lindsay Allen, D2N2 Senior Programme Manager (Sector Development) and lead officer for the D2N2 Growth Hub, said: “D2N2’s Growth Hub works with start-ups and SMEs at all levels, but we identified a need for extra assistance for those companies already doing well but with high ambitions.
“Through the ScaleUp Service we and our delivery partners will be providing expert guidance and assistance to get these companies to the next level of growth.”
Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at the Chamber, said: “It’s all too easy for firms to grow quickly and then plateau because they don’t know how to take the next step or don’t have the time or resources to do it. The D2N2 Growth Hub ScaleUp Service is all about helping SMEs take that next step.
“And the beauty of the programme is that it completes a virtuous circle where Government, through D2N2, encourages and assists firms to take that next step which, it is proven, then creates more jobs and more wealth which boosts the economy.”
Head of Executive Education and Corporate Relations, College of Business Law & Social Sciences, Nottingham Trent University’s Business School, Julie Holland, is equally enthusiastic about the project. She said: “Fast growth can be just as challenging to businesses as lack of opportunity.
“Having the chance to work with some of the region’s fastest growing firms, to support their long-term sustainability, will help us to support managers now and in the future with their scale-up challenges and will provide career opportunities for our talented graduates.”
Mike Epton, Managing Director at CMBD, said: “We have been helping businesses in the D2N2 area realise their growth ambitions for nearly 15 years and, with our partners, intend to deliver a truly integrated programme of support to meet the specific needs of individual businesses as well as creating a community of growth for D2N2 focused around our Growth Hub.”
John Collins, Coaching Director at PCA, added: “Our coaches have achieved some fantastic results with high-growth businesses over the past 12 years and we are excited to be involved in delivering the new Growth Hub ScaleUp Service with our partners.
“This represents a really new approach, building an integrated and seamless ecosystem of support to assist the growth aspirations of successful, established businesses in D2N2; helping them through the challenges of scaling up their performance, profitability and employment.”
Places on the exclusive D2N2 Growth Hub ScaleUp Service are limited. Firms wanting to take part in the programme should, in the first instance visit www.d2n2growthhub.co.uk/scaleup, or email info@d2n2growthhub.co.uk or call 0333 006 9178.

Abacus Lighting - Nottinghamshire Business of the Year
by @ East Midlands Chamber
Sat Sep 16 01:27:00 PDT 2017
A company that sells large-scale lighting solutions around the world has won the top honours at the region’s most prestigious business awards.
Abacus Lighting, which designs, builds, installs and maintains lighting systems for roads, rail depots, airports, industrial premises and sports stadia, took the Business of the Year accolade at the Chamber's Nottinghamshire Business Awards.
Working from concept to creation and aftersales maintenance, Abacus Lighting’s specialist in-house teams work hard to ensure that every project exceeds customer expectations.
It has dedicated and experienced teams, working in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Americas, the Caribbean, Asia and Oceania as well as in the UK.
Receiving the award from sponsor Mazars, Managing Director Camilla Wigmore said: “I’m very proud to receive this on behalf of the company. It’s a great accolade to get this award in our 40th year of Chamber membership and for a company that’s been in existence for 60 years. I thank you on behalf of everyone at Abacus.”
The company was one of 12 to win an award last night (Friday 15 September), as the Chamber celebrated the strength and successes of businesses across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
To qualify as a contender for the supreme accolade of Business of the Year, Sutton-in-Ashfield-based Abacus Lighting had already scooped the Excellence in International Trade Award.
Chamber President Geoff Poyzer said: “The Chamber’s congratulations go to all of this year’s winners. We had some really good entries and the judging process, as it is every year, was extremely tough, but all the winning businesses thoroughly deserve their success.
“The standard of competition was extremely high, which clearly shows that despite the political and economic uncertainties of Brexit and a General Election resulting in a minority Government, we have some real success stories of Nottinghamshire businesses doing very well. All of the finalists deserve recognition for their success.
“Over the past 12 months, businesses in Nottinghamshire have been busy keeping calm and carrying on investing, innovating, exporting and growing. These awards are testament to the quality of the businesses we have in this city and county and I applaud each and every one of them.”
