SEO checklist: 7 essential tips to implement now for 2017

by Rizwan Mansuri @ WEBBYFOX

What makes a site technically perfect? Here are the 7 factors that will likely play the biggest part in the technical SEO of 2017. In 2016, there’s been a lot of speculation on the value of technical SEO. It was called makeup; some of it was proclaimed dead; but ultimately, it was brought back to life gracefully and conclusively with outstanding examples of technical SEO tactics resulting in major traffic boosts. So why are opinions on this seemingly uncontroversial topic so divided? The problem may lie in the definition of technical SEO. If we refer to it as “the practices implemented on the website and server that are intended to maximize site usability, search engine crawling, and indexing,” then (we hope) everyone can agree that technical SEO is the necessary foundation of top search engine rankings. In this post, we’ll focus on the seven fundamental steps to technical SEO success in 2017. Some of these have been relevant for a while; others are fairly new and have to do with the recent search engine changes. Let’s get rollin’! 1. Check indexing. Let’s start with the number of your site’s pages that are indexed by search engines. You can check this by entering site:domain.com in your target search engine or by using an SEO crawler like WebSite Auditor. Ideally, this number should be largely proportional to the total number of pages on your site, minus the ones you don’t want indexed. If there’s a bigger gap than you expected, you’ll need to review your disallowed pages. Which brings us to the next point. 2. Make sure important resources are crawlable. To check your site’s crawlability, you may be tempted to simply look through robots.txt; but often, it’s just as inaccurate as it is simple. Robots.txt is just one of the ways...

Consumer focus are the future of local SEO

by Rizwan Mansuri @ WEBBYFOX

What are citations, and how do they impact local SEO? Columnist Julian Connors explains in this beginner-level local search column. In the world of search engine optimisation (SEO), a citation is a direct mention of a specific brand within an online platform. Some of the more common examples of online citations are comments published within a community blog about a favorite local coffee shop or an unpleasant experience working with a franchise outlet. Citations serve as contextual forms of content that are recognized and indexed by search crawlers. On a local level, citations have the ability to improve organic visibility for small businesses and community brands alike. Consumers mentioning a local brand within an online platform can offer a number of benefits that ultimately allow small businesses to increase their visibility within each major search engine. Here’s why. Citations help search engines attribute value Google and other major search engines have designed their algorithms to be able to detect and attribute value based on the type of messaging that surrounds a brand. When online consumers publish content in the form of comments or reviews, search engines are able to crawl this information and use it to help them assess how valuable a particular business is for other like-minded consumers. Citations support online conversions When local businesses provide experiences that elicit positive online reviews, they can catalyze word-of-mouth marketing across social networks and other user-generated content websites. Online consumers are more likely to engage with a local business if they have attracted positive reviews from other like-minded consumers. In fact, 74 percent of consumers say that positive reviews make them trust a local business more, according to a recent report offered by BrightLocal. Businesses can earn positive reviews or citations by continuously providing an experience that aligns with the intentions of the target audience and satisfies their specific needs. Search engines understand structured citations Structured citations are fundamental...

Google reviews schema guidelines now prohibit vulgar or profane language

by Rizwan Mansuri @ WEBBYFOX

Make sure your reviews don’t contain profane or vulgar language, if they do, Google can remove your review rich snippets. Google has changed their guidelines for their reviews schema to prohibit the use of schema for reviews that contain profanity and vulgar language. The new guidelines section added a line that reads, “profanity and vulgar language are prohibited. Do not include reviews that contain vulgar or profane language.” This means that if you markup your reviews with schema for Google and some of the reviews contain profanity and vulgar language, that you need to remove those reviews from your web site or remove the schema. Since reviews are left by your users, it can mean that you need to make sure to adapt your internal quality controls to ensure old and new reviews do not contain such language. If you do allow profanity and vulgar language in your reviews, Google reserves the right to remove your rich snippets from the search results.
