In college or grad school, most likely you had to write many research papers. Your professor probably had strict guidelines on what citations or references you could use. They likely had to be quality references from the original researcher. While it wasn’t always fun finding them, it was important because it (hopefully) strengthened your research paper’s argument. Building citations for local SEO is fairly similar to the above example. The basic premise of local citation building is that you will create authoritative and relevant business citations across the web that point back to your website. This helps Google and other search engines know what your business is, what area(s) it serves and other key information. While the research paper is not a perfect analogy, it hopefully helps communicate the basic need for business citations. I doubt any of us shops blindly for groceries, and the same applies for other services. When making a purchasing decision, we do our homework by asking friends, reading online reviews, and by visiting different websites. Our shopping process is usually a fragmented approach as we collect data from many different data sources, one of them being online review sites. We’ve already covered why online reviews are important, so in this post, we’ll discuss a few ideas to actually collect additional reviews. List Review Profiles on Your Website This suggestion is very basic, but very effective. If you have a testimonials page or have room in your footer, it’s a good idea to add a link or badge to popular review sites. Yelp and other directories usually provide the code for these badges, so simply give that to your developer. The nice thing about this is that you can easily just point happy customers to your website for the review links. While that may sound a bit intimidating to non-marketing geeks, there are a lot of tools and tricks of the trade to help make that process easier. The reason why it’s good to start with keyword research, is because you need to know what to focus on for your on-page optimization, your content marketing strategy and even your link building efforts. The goal of keyword research is to help identify keyword phrases that people search in Google that drive high amounts of traffic, are relevant to your business and have a buyer intent. If you don’t hit on those three things, you will be wasting your time. Think of keyword research as a compass or GPS. It will help navigate optimization efforts, so you aren’t making blind decisions. Content marketing has exploded over the past couple of years. A simple analysis through Google Trends shows the search interest over time. Just for fun, we decided to compare “content marketing” with “cold calling,” and it’s not surprise to see the shift in trends. The truth is that businesses and marketing companies are producing content in record numbers. This can be in the form of blogs, whitepapers, videos, SlideShares, gifs, etc. You may ask, why are companies producing so much content? Content marketing is a great way to attract long-tail search phrases for your SEO. Long tail keywords are those three and four keyword phrases which are very, very specific to whatever you are selling. You see, whenever a customer uses a highly specific search phrase, they tend to be looking for exactly what they are actually going to buy. In virtually every case, such very specific searches are far more likely to convert to sales than general generic searches that tend to be geared more toward the type of research that consumers typically do prior to making a buying decision.
