So You Want to be a Disruptor? Be Authentic First.
by Megan Hayne @ NW & Associates : Consulting|Marketing|WebDesign
Wed Jul 05 16:17:47 PDT 2017
We all admire those people who think outside the box. They always seem to be one step ahead, super creative, and on point with their ideas. We call them disruptors. The execution of their ideas is such that the public stands in awe and buys their vision before it has even come to fruition. What if I told you that you don’t have to be Steve Jobs to be a disruptor? You can be a disruptor in your field, maybe on a small scale at first, simply by being your true authentic self. Sorry if this sounds cliché, but it is the truth. From a marketing standpoint, so much content is created by people trying to mimic marketing campaigns that have worked in another context. With all the inspiring material that has already been created, how can we marketers keep it fresh? Figure out the snowflake quality in your client, product, or service. Want to know if you are doing it right? Check and see if you are little afraid. When you are being authentic, it puts your ego on edge. You suddenly care more how you are received. If you aren’t a little nervous to hit the post button, let me dare you to rethink your post. Take a risk, it is worth the reward.

Your Brand Must Be Distinguishable
by nathanwebster @ NW & Associates : Consulting|Marketing|WebDesign
Fri Jul 14 12:50:55 PDT 2017
Your Brand Must Be Distinguishable When you have an international juggernaut and let’s make sure we are talking about a distinguishable brand, the goal is to be iconic. It’s iconic because an unforgettable experience has been created. No matter where you’re at in the world, the majority recognize ‘x’ company just by looking at their logo. Why does a brand need to be distinguishable? Sustainability. Brand recognition is distinguishable. A great one will stand out amongst its competitors. The competitors will follow suit and mimic if possible by making them their benchmark. The company I think of that really embodies this method is Nike. And I may be a little biased, but everywhere I turn around someone is wearing Nike. (I like to use companies from the Pacific Northwest, especially Washington state since folks don’t realize we exist.) Nike has put themselves into a position– that they worked hard for– to compete with various companies like the apparel industry, lifestyle brands and athletic organizations. In most of these groups I mentioned, they are the benchmark in all of them. Nike’s brand stands for innovation because it wants to be distinguishable. Every organization has to stand out in someway or another. If you don’t stand out, you’re not gonna get noticed. When you don’t get noticed, how are you going to sell your idea and make a profit? Without being recognized from a local to international level, a company won’t be in business for very long. No matter if you’re a for-profit or non-profit, an idea needs to be successful in the marketplace to keep the lights on. The bills won’t be paid from one great meeting or a whiteboard brainstorming session. On a personal level, please don’t set out to be mediocre or average. Have your organization’s logo stand out...

How to Update WordPress Plugins
by Rebekah Dull @ NW & Associates : Consulting|Marketing|WebDesign
Sat Aug 19 21:10:17 PDT 2017
As the owner of multiple WordPress websites, it is a major (and required) responsibility to keep your website plugins updated at all times. Failing to do so could result in broken pages, displaced content and a slow loading site. Here is a step by step guide on how to update your WordPress plugins. Step 1: Log Into Your Website For example, nwebsterllc.com/wp-admin. The easiest way to do this to navigate to your website www.yourdomain.com and then add the /wp-admin after. You’ll see the WordPress logo “W” promoting you to log in. Enter your username/email and your password. If you have forgotten your login information or your webmaster has not provided you with them, just click the “lost your password?” down at the bottom. Now, you should be logged in. Step 2: Navigate the Menu When you log into your website you will see a menu bar on the left side of your screen. Think of this menu bar as the “Home” screen on your computer or cell phone. You will always go back to the this menu bar when doing anything from updating your pages to creating a post. The easiest place to update the plugins on your website is to go directly under “Home,” which you will see “Updates” right below. If there is an update that is needed it will have an orange circle with the number of updates that are needed. For example, in the photo under this step, it says (3) are required to be updated. You can also update your plugins by navigating to the “plugins” tab on your left menu bar. It also has a orange circle with a number in it. (note: sometimes these numbers can be different because other items need to be updated such as your WordPress version or the...

In-house Agency vs. Outsourcing Digital Marketing
by Kent Lewis @ NW & Associates : Consulting|Marketing|WebDesign
Fri Aug 11 16:30:50 PDT 2017
In-house Agency vs. Outsourcing Digital Marketing As a veteran digital marketer based in Portland, OR, I’ve seen the world of search engine marketing, social media, analytics and conversion optimization evolve since optimizing my first website in 1996. One of the more prominent trends affecting digital marketing agencies I’ve personally experienced in the last few years is the client’s increasing desire to take search engine optimization (SEO), pay-per-click (PPC) and social media marketing in-house. The trend, while logical, has dangerous implications for corporations and agencies alike. According to a recent eMarketer study, there are a host of pitfalls to building an in-house digital marketing team. The three greatest disadvantages, according to US marketers, include: Staying on top of key trends (internal teams are typically busy fighting fires and don’t have the time or interest to read marketing publications or attend industry events) Creative innovation is lacking (creative, innovative types often feel constrained and bored when working for a corporation vs. a dynamic “square-free” agency environment) Skill sets of staff is limited (most companies cannot afford seasoned talent) Additionally, in-house agencies typically lack technical depth, diverse experience or ability to think strategically. Interestingly, recruitment and retention has become an issue in the past few years for corporations, as former agency talent has had the opportunity to work in-house and prefers the dynamic agency environment. Corporations are learning what agencies already know: talent is hard to come by and even harder to keep. Whether your company is based in Portland, Seattle or Dallas, you can only throw so many free snacks and monthly massages at a digital marketer used to free beer on tap at agencies. Starting at Square One: To Build or Not To Build As my integrated marketing agency, Anvil Media, enters into its 18th year, one of the greatest challenges...

In 2016 I attended my first Digital Summit, and I thought it might be my last. Not because of the location or the people, but the quality of some presentations. Many of which, felt like sales pitches for platforms and proprietary tools. There were a few standout hits like Oli Gardner’s presentation on CRO (which was hilarious).

Brand Reputation
by nathanwebster @ NW & Associates : Consulting|Marketing|WebDesign
Sun Aug 27 19:49:24 PDT 2017
Brand Reputation I start my Business 101 class asking students, “who buys from companies that you haven’t heard about, from or seen before? In other words, “do you buy from companies that haven’t used a marketing strategy on you?” I quickly like to make the point that we all shop from companies we know. As a small business or startup, the goal we should all be striving for is to create relationships with people who we know, like and trust. Successful business is done through relationships, not transactions. Those relationships are created by companies who understand the significance of having a distinguishable brand reputation. The 2017 Fortune 10 has the most recognized names. Their marketing teams have mastered this concept, otherwise they wouldn’t be on this list. However, the order is determined by their revenues. I included the links of the companies in case there is one or two you may not know. Here’s the list: 1. Wal-Mart – https://www.walmart.com 2. Berkshire Hathaway – http://www.berkshirehathaway.com 3. Apple – https://www.apple.com 4. Exxon Mobil – http://corporate.exxonmobil.com 5. McKesson – http://www.mckesson.com 6. UnitedHealth Group – http://www.unitedhealthgroup.com 7. CVS Health – https://cvshealth.com 8. General Motors – https://www.gm.com 9. AT&T – https://www.att.com 10. Ford Motor Company – https://www.ford.com While I was typing these companies in my search engine, I realized they consist both of products and services. There are even some that own other companies as subsidiaries. For example, Apple owns Beats by Dre headphones. Even better, Berkshire Hathaway just gives you a link to the list of the 50+ companies Warren Buffett oversees. I mention services because a good brand reputation includes both tangible and intangible products. To make it a bit more clear, I’ll use what Mark Cuban said to someone on Shark Tank. As I paraphrase, the brand is the feelings a customer has after the purchase. So it doesn’t matter if it’s...

Influencer Marketing: A DIY Guide For Beginners
by Megan Hayne @ NW & Associates : Consulting|Marketing|WebDesign
Thu Jul 27 14:21:58 PDT 2017
Influencer Marketing is another buzz word in the marketing field. It is a big deal. One way that the digital marketing world has changed traditional advertising is that influencer marketing is now far more accessible than the paid celebrity endorsements that most of us know so well. So what do you do if you can’t afford to hire Samuel L. Jackson to rep your new financial product? Here are four tips to get you started on exploring an influencer marketing campaign. Discover Your Passion An Influencer is basically someone with a platform. People listen to her or him. From a marketing perspective, depending on your industry, thought-leaders are some of the most powerful influencers out there. These are people who have a passion, a cause, and something to say about it. They have become famous or popular because of their ideas. So before you set out to explore influencer marketing for your business, ask yourself, what type of people are passionate about what you offer the world? Who do these people pay attention to? Just like in any marketing campaign, understanding your ideal client (target market) is a key first step. Follow Some of the Big Dogs Now that you understand who your ideal client is, think about whose work they already follow. As an example, if you work in the content marketing world, there is no doubt that you have heard of Seth Godin. You probably have read at least a couple of his books. You probably follow his daily blog. His ideal client maybe be similar to yours, even if yours is on a smaller scale. If you want to explore influencer marketing in the marketing world (I know this is getting pretty metta), it is a good idea to follow and maybe even start to interact on...

The Age of the “Target Market” is Over
by Megan Hayne @ NW & Associates : Consulting|Marketing|WebDesign
Thu Aug 24 13:22:15 PDT 2017
The marketing term “Target Market” has been around since the dawn of advertising. However, many marketing and business professionals are moving away from this term for a good reason. The problem does not stem from the concept itself. Obviously, you need to know to whom you want to sell your goods and services. You need to know what drives these people to make purchasing decisions, and the best way to appeal to them. The problem stems from the mentality that birthed this phrase. Think about it. If someone is your “target” in this analogy, that means you are the shooter or the archer taking aim at your prey. Frankly, the modern consumer expects more from a business. With the birth of the digital marketplace, consumers have more choices than ever before. With this vast world of choices, these consumers suddenly are able to provide extensive input about how they want to feel when make purchases. Do you think anyone wants to feel like they are being hunted by a crafty woodsman and that he or she is what’s for dinner? Many forward thinking marketing professionals and business owners are replacing the term “target market” with more collaborative phrases like “dream client” or “ideal customer.” I invite you to join them in dropping the hunting analogies from your marketing vocabulary.

Why You Should Fire Your Social Media Marketing Manager
by Kent Lewis @ NW & Associates : Consulting|Marketing|WebDesign
Wed Sep 13 13:21:56 PDT 2017
Why You Should Fire Your Social Media Marketing Manager I recently hosted an all-day boot camp on the fundamentals of digital marketing at Online Marketing Summit in San Diego. During the social media marketing section, I explained to a somewhat confused audience that they should all consider firing their Social Media Marketing Managers. The reason is simple: the job description is inherently flawed. Based on my experience, what companies truly need to hire, in order to maintain relevance in the new Millennium, is a Social Media Evangelist. I’ve worked with a variety of “forward-looking” companies over the years, many of which have had the “foresight” to hire a recent college graduate “native” to social media, and put them in the powerful position of representing the corporate brand externally. There are a variety of challenges inherent to hiring inexperienced, unproven talent for such a critical role: inadequate communication skills, inability to self-direct, lack of business or marketing knowledge or understanding of company history and culture. Younger talent also lacks experience in working with management (assuming they are given access in the first place) as well as navigating corporate policies and politics. The cost of developing younger talent, regardless of potential and level of enthusiasm, can be significant in terms of time and money. On the other hand, hiring a “seasoned” social media professional will cost dearly up front (possibly a six figure salary) and may bring other issues to the table, including predisposed thoughts regarding overall social media philosophy and process. Assuming you do get lucky and find an affordable, intelligent socially-savvy individual to fill the position, the role is typically so time-consuming that they are unable to take the time to stay on top of the latest social media tools, trends and tactics. More importantly, they may not have the...

Game of Thrones is an action packed hit HBO original series. The show depicts the fight between families, kings, queens and untrustworthy individuals to reach and keep the seat of the king of the 7 kingdoms. Don’t stop reading here. Here’s how and… Why You Should Full on “Game of Thrones” Your Business. Never Stop Improving In one point in time, King Robert Baratheon was the most fierce warrior and the greatest leader. As time went on, he became comfortable with his seat on the thrown. He no longer was on his game, on his deathbed his wife did the unthinkable betrayal and his once trusted confidants plotted against him. Lesson: never stop improving your systems, processes, team and self. In the business world, you will never reach the point of “I made it,” because there’s always someone willing and waiting for the moment to take it away from you. Keep Loyalty at the Center of Your Business The entire series, Game of Thrones involves loyalty and the breaking of it. One of the greatest examples is when Shae, Tyrion Lancasters’ “girlfriend” who he loved very much, betrayed him by providing her testimony for the other side while Tyrion was on trial for his life. Lesson: an open honest and loyal environment is critical for the success of a business, especially a small business. Ensure that as the owner and/or manager you’re creating an environment that rewards loyalty and encourages teamwork and inclusiveness. Always Weigh Your Risks and Rewards As you’ve heard “the greater the risk, the greater the reward.” In the Game of Thrones world it either...

Ever since Facebook was founded in February of 2004, it’s made a huge impact on the world of marketing. Over the years the platform has collected customer data and revamped it’s algorithm so that businesses can reach their desired outcome marketing on the platform. Facebook is a valuable social marketing tool for businesses and nonprofits. Whether your goal is to raise funds, increase engagement or find new clients, you need to know how to manage your Facebook page roles. Facebook page roles gives you the ability to give several employees or contractors access to your business page without giving everyone admin abilities. This means that an editor can create and post content and change company information on the about tab. Moderator: A Moderator has about half as much authority and access over the business page as an Admin does. They can send messages on the page, respond and delete comments, and remove and ban people. They can also do the basic things such as run campaigns and view insights. Advertiser: An Advertiser is everything your...
